The construction sector has committed to reaching net zero by 2050, but is struggling to achieve that goal, in particular for embodied carbon from building materials. Due to the lack of progress in reducing emissions, humanity will need to capture and lock away gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere: 10 Gt per year by 2050.

Meanwhile, concrete, the second-most consumed material on earth after water, and responsible for approximately 8% of global emissions, is on track to double production between now and 2060. ecoLocked is turning that challenge into an opportunity to permanently store captured carbon and create better concrete.

We are developing products that turn captured carbon into high-performance building materials. One of the tools we use is biochar, a stable carbonaceous material resulting from the most cost-efficient and mature carbon removal technology, Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR). Our first products are biochar-based concrete admix materials that permanently sequester captured carbon throughout the built environment, while reducing the need for cement, sand, and other raw materials. Each product is engineered to meet and even enhance targeted concrete performance characteristics such as strength, weight reduction, durability, insulation, and even pollution filtration capabilities.
